“…At last, Simon Keenlyside was once again invited to the house in which in 1988 he had his first stage success as Conte Almaviva. He is very convincing in the part of Golaud –equally in singing and in acting. The Golaud scenes, in which he changed from initially being compassionate and in love, later jealous and finally to a brutal husband and father, desperate at having murdered his half-brother, played out for the audience almost like a thriller.
This warm baritone voice is perfectly cast for this part. Simon Keenlyside uses his voice cautiously at first, but gains more and more power during the course of the evening and finally sings convincingly and hauntingly with dramatic fervour. One is inclined to feel sorry for the character, which is not really appropriate….”

“…It is with great pleasure that we find Simon Keenlyside. At almost 60 years of age and after years of vocal crisis, he returns to the scene after a few seasons and sketches out here a Golaud as vocally luxurious as his French is painstaking. The baritone stretches through the psychological arc with the passing scenes until he ends in violent madness….”

“… Simon Keenlyside again reaches the highest level, in terms of acting, for this most dramatic character of the opera (Golaud). He creates a tortured man, filled with torment from the moment he is lost in the forest to the final scene, when he stands in front of Mélisande, who is lying on her deathbed as if crucified. His authoritative voice does not have the same nuances as in the past, but his singing still has the same impact, intensified by an acting of rare violence, when he is trying to find out and understand things, whether from Yniold, Pelléas or Mélisande….”
