His Rigoletto was a deeply moving, disturbing portrayal. Simon’s frenzied satisfaction and mockery over the – so he thinks – duke’s dead body at his feet was overwhelming and I have not yet seen him perform this scene in such a manner. Same role, always a couple of fine differences and subtleties.
We also had the joy of watching his great performance in Munich in October, but – if possible – Bratislava was even more moving.
The staging was simple but convincing and on a higher level than the silly Munich production.
Gilda (A.Vizvari) and the duke (L.Ludha) were trying hard, getting better as the evening progressed and reaching quite a satisfactory level.
