BBC Radio 3, Composer of the Week, Friday 13th Sept, Gluck. Will feature an excerpt from Simon’s recording of Iphigenie en Tauride. The programme is on at 12 noon, and repeated at 6.30pm.
Diana.
Lovely to hear Simon’s very human Elijha in an except from Paul McCreesh’s recording which was broadcast on Radio 3’s The Choir on Sunday 30th June. It comes about 50 minutes into the programme and is available to listen again until 6th July.
Simon was on Radio 3 again today singing in “Saul and the Witch at Endor” from “Complete Purcell Realizations” by Britten (recorded in 1995) on the Early Music Show. It’s about 25 minutes into the programme which runs from 1:00pm – 2:00pm. It will be available to listen to again over the next week.
Sue (as I have already told you) you are a star! Those Five Mystical Songs sung by Simon are absolutely wonderful …. but his interpretation of – “Love Bade Me Welcome” is in a realm iof its own for me. It is exquisite – so achingly beautiful and it reduces me to tears every time! As far as I am concerned you definitely chose the best song on that CD, so a huge thank you for getting it broadcast to the nation on Monday!
A small, but perfectly per-formed song from Simon’s Vaughan Williams recital CD with Graham Johnson: there are six days left to listen again on BBC iPlayer to the Radio 3 Breakfast programme broadcast on Monday 10 June 2013. Simon sings the VW setting of George Herbert’s ‘Love Bade Me Welcome’ from his ‘Five Mystical Songs’. The song is about an hour and a half into the programme.
Enjoy!
The above programme is now available on You Tube. Just look for The Genius of Verdi.
Diana.
For those who missed it, there was a programme on BBC4 tv last night, (10th May) “The Genius of Verdi,” presented by Rolando Villazon, and featured clips from Simon’s Macbeth, and also a couple of clips of Simon talking about Verdi. It is available to watch on iplayer for a week.
Diana.
According to BBC Radio 3 website, Simon’s Macbeth from ROH will be re-broadcast on Thursday 25th April at 2pm as part of their Verdi 200 celebrations.
Diana.
….and a substantial extract too (as well as a subsansial one!! – sorry!)
Hi, just wondering how many people have been listening to radio 3 this morning and heard CD review which this week was reviewing recordings of Billy Budd. After listening to various versions, he finally revealed that his recommendation was indeed the 1999 Chandos recording with Simon as Billy Budd along with John Tomlinson and Philip Langridge. Yeay!!! ….and there will be a subsanstial extract from it played on Monday morning on radio 3 in the programme Essential Classics just after 11:00am apparently. Let’s hope the extract WILL include Simon. You can never be sure with radio 3!!!
Yes well done Sue! I will certainly be tuning in to here Simon to-morrow morning.
Yes Diana, I think the trick is to fit in with the BBC’s themes, commemorative events etc. Last time I asked for a track from Songs of War for Remembrance Sunday and they played The Infinite Shining Heavens.
Good for you Sue! Maybe if everyone who loves Simon sends in a request, whether or not they want to do the interview, the BBC may acknowledge that there are a lot of people out there who want to hear him! I shall be tuned in! You must have the knack Sue, as this is not the first time you’ve had a request for Simon played is it?
Diana.
Listen out for Simon singing Schubert’s Auf der Bruck on BBC Radio 3’s Breakfast programme under their ‘Winter Warmers’ theme – I’m told it will probably be on Wednesday morning 16th Jan. I’m afraid I’m not as brave as you Diana; I chickened out on the live interview. As the programme starts at 6.30 a.m. I would recommend using ‘Listen again’.
The Beeb does seem reluctant to play Simon’s recordings these days but clearly will do so with a little prompting – so have a go!
I live in New York and yes, I’m a lucky lady because chances are to watch not only HD broadcast on Nov 10th but also Met Encore program, as usual in 3 or 4 weeks, and probably Summer Encore in 2013. New Yorkers have access to 3 free (not cable) Public TV stations, so in 2013 at list one station will broadcast The Tempest again twice.
BUT! Please don’t envy me. Looks like ROH ignores the USA for 2012-2013 season. Germany, Spain, Austria are here but I cannot find how to watch ROH productions in NY.
Met opera has a paid service Met on Demand. ‘Met Opera on Demand is accessible worldwide, provided your computer and internet connection meet the site’s technical requirements’ – they say. Maybe this is a way to watch missing pieces. Operas are streamed to the subscriber’s computer. You can order just one opera or monthly or annual subscriptions and pay by credit card.

I never tried it but I’m tempted. I’d like to see older productions; some of them exist as DVDs. Two Simon’s great performances in the Met (Hamlet and Rodrigo in Don Carlo) are included, too. A new opera will be added later but it is better than nothing, and DVD will be even better.
Hi DK
yes in Germany always only 8 of 12 were broadcast – the reason are costs – for the broadcast itself and the cinemas are fearing to loose their “normal” audience as esp in this autumn there are several opera broadcasts quite close to each other …. and so OF COURSE the “new” opera will be skipped, you won’t skip Anna N or Jonas Kaufmann or a Verdi opera ….
Hi Diana–I think you are right (unfortunately). 🙁
Petra–I don’t understand why only a partial selection of broadcasts are being shown in Germany or Austria–has that happened in previous Met HD seasons? If they are filming in HD then at least perhaps a DVD will be released…but that can take time if it happens at all, though I’m guessing more likely in this case than not since there isn’t a commercial video of this opera otherwise available. It looks like the Met has finally put up the scheduled dates for listening live on their webstreaming service. As presently scheduled The Tempest will be streamed live on Tues 23 Oct beginning at 7:25 pm East Coast time. You’ll unfortunately have to stay up late for this. There will also be 3 live radio broadcasts on Sirius XM for those who subscribe to that service (I don’t, though I’m tempted).
Don’t be too jealous–it’s a rare treat for us on this side of the Atlantic to have a new opera produced at a major house. And we have FAR fewer opera houses and performances available, especially compared to Germany.
Hi DK
well, “Europe” is not really right – it will be broadcast in UK but NOT in Germany and not in Austria as not all of the Met Broadcast are coming to us on the continent….sigh … we have to hope for a DVD!
Hello DK
I think this is the performance that Simon cancelled and Thomas Hampson replaced him. It would seem that France Musique haven’t got the updated information.
Diana.
A broadcast of the Brahms Deutsches Requiem with Simon Keenlyside and Susan Gritton (recorded Feb 2012 in London) is up on France Musique (concert de soir) at the moment. The concert starts with Beethoven’s 4th symphony and a few Brahms Lieder are added at the end.

Also, I don’t see it on the calendar yet but the Met is broadcasting The Tempest live in HD on Saturday 10 November, worldwide…possibly delayed streaming in some parts of the world but it is a matinee performance so timed conveniently for European audiences.
The first night of Don Carlo is also being broadcast live on Francemusique. We are spoilt for choice here!
Diana.
Hello Petra,
Thanks. That’s a relief.
Cheers
Kew
Hi Kew
The opening nights are ALWAYS broadcast live in OE1 …. so Don Carlo better should be no exeption!!
regards
Petra
BR Klassik will broadcast Don Carlo of Vienna State Opera at 19:05 on 19 June, which will be recorded on the premier night.
http://www.br.de/radio/br-klassik/programmkalender/sendung314148.html
I wonder if the similar programme is scheduled on oe1, which is more convenient as they have a 1-week on demand service.
Cheers
Kew
Tired – a jewel of a song. Perfect for my ‘daily fix’ of Simon’s voice. I can’t function without it!
Thank you for letting us know, Diana.
Composer of the Week, Radio 3, next week is Vaughan-Williams. Friday 20th Jan, 12 noon, first item on programme is Simon singing the beautiful song “Tired”. Repeated 6.30pm.
Diana.
This is a repeat, but BBC Radio 3 will broadcast Le nozze di Figaro of Salzburg Festival 2011 on Afternoon on 3 (2pm, 22 December).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0185d9p
Hope it will be available for a usual 1-week On-demand service.
Cheers
Hello all,
Front Row on BBC Radio 4 schedules to have Simon on the 11 November, this Friday. Its news said, “…and baritone Simon Keenlyside reflects on his selection of songs which evoke the feelings of soldiers in the trenches of the first world war”
Cheers
Kew
Many thanks for letting us know Diana
Janet
Hi everyone, just been browsing Radio 4 website, and discovered a programme called Tales from the Stave next Tues (Oct 18th) lunchtime. It’s a talk about Don Giovanni and features Simon along with conductor Jane Glover.
Diana.
Hello everyone
I cannot take the credit for discovering this – well done Diana – you texted me a little while ago to say that Simon’s recital at the Wigmore Hall which starts at 7:30pm next Tuesday, 28th June, will be broadcast live on Radio 3!! Yeay!!!…thought this excellent news should be shared asap.
Hi all! In case you don’t know, this Saturday , 8th Jan, BBC Radio 3, as part of it’s Genius of Mozart programmes, is featuring a couple of clips of Simon, from Don Giovanni and Marriage of Figaro, on “Donald Macleod’s Mozart” between noon and 1pm.
Hello,
I just found out that there could be a chance to see SK in
“Netrebko, Garanca, Domingo … An der Wiener Staatsoper
Abschiedsgala Ioan Holender (from 26. June 2010)”
SK was the last to perform on this evening with “Pietà, rispetto, amore” (Macbeth). On youtube it’s already deleted, unfortunately.
Date:
10 July 201 at 8:15 pm, arte (German and French Broadcast) and again on 12 July 2010 at 11:30 am,
impressions from the Abschiedsgala Ian Holender (26 June 2010), 45 min.
The program will take only 45 minutes and there were so many world famous singers in this gala (NOT Garanca …) you could just check it and announce then the second showing of this program (12 July 2010, 11:30 am). Maybe they put it also in arte+ on the arte website and it will be available to view again for seven more days it in the internet.
Thank you for this wonderful website – what would I do without your meticulous schedule and given the bland fact: I’m hopelessly addicted to SK’s voice …
Have already ticket for October, Temple Church and February, Deutsche Oper Berlin :), thanx to your informations as many times before!
Best greetings
Brigitte, Germany
